TIPPI HEDREN: “THE BIRDS” ORIGINAL EDITH HEAD “MELANIE DANIELS” GREEN SUIT COSTUME SKETCH (WITH DVD)

An original gouache and ink on paper costume sketch from the production of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds (Alfred J. Hitchcock Productions, 1963) by Edith Head, titled “Birds”/ Hedren in pencil in her hand to the top right. The sketch depicts Tippi Hedren as Melanie Daniels in the iconic green suit designed for and worn by her throughout most of the film. The Birds was Hedren’s film debut, and she won the Golden Globe award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.

In 2014, when curator-designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis assembled over 150 costumes for the now famous “Hollywood Costume” exhibit in Los Angeles, she selected the green suit worn by Hedren in The Birds as the iconic costume of the 1960s. As Nadoolman Landis observed, “an icon is born when a character can be instantly recognized in a silhouette.”
